It has been over 3 years since I brought home my last newborn and I have had the experience of doing this little rite of passage 5 times. Every baby was different and every baby taught me a little bit about parenting and motherhood. Looking back there are things that I wished I knew when I bought my newborn home.
Bringing home your newborn should be the most exciting and best remembered events. With a few of my babies it truly was amazing! However, with some of my babies it was painful, stressful and I looked back wishing I had known a few extra pieces of advice.
The announcement that you are heading home often is a signal for every family member and friend to pop by! The first day I was so excited to show my new baby off because he was perfect! I wanted everyone to see the miracle we had brought to the world! By day 4 the flood of well wishers had not slowed down and exhaustion had hit full force. I didn’t want to tell anyone no but all I wanted was a nap, uninterrupted.
My mother gave me the best advice, hide. Lock the door, go to your room or go to someone else house, where you can rest and sleep when needed. Turn the phone off. I didn’t want to be rude but I wished I had known my limits before.
With the arrival of every new baby I wished I had asked for the help that was being offered. I didn’t want anyone to see the unwashed dishes or the laundry. Trying to give attention to the big siblings and care for a newborn and greet company was overwhelming. With my last baby, I did reach out and asked people to take the toddler out for a couple of hours and I was ready when someone said, ‘Can I help you with something?’ Why yes! The dishes, laundry or cooking! Please pick one! Those were the greatest gifts! I stopped being embarrassed that I wasn’t this Superwoman who could care for a new baby, deal with the injured post-partum body, run on 2 hours of broken sleep while keeping my house in perfect order. No, I was human, tired, sore and overwhelmed. Accepting the offers of housework and prepped meals felt amazing. I also learned people felt good being able to help and do something.
With my first baby I planned the going home outfits for him and I (still in maternity clothes) and I was thrilled about the blue balloons tied to the front door to announce to the neighborhood that he had arrived (pre-Facebook days!). What I didn’t plan well was the self care. Healing took weeks longer then it should have and if I had only taken the time for me, I know I would have felt better, sooner.
When my 5th baby came home, I was ready. I had a plan for self care for a c-section and a natural delivery. Pain meds, sprays, Tuck pads and creams. I made time for sitz baths and forced myself to nap (I am not a napper). I made sure that we had good meals pre-made and frozen, groceries were bought. My healing was quicker due to the diligent care I took of my self.
Those first few days and weeks flew by in a blur of exhaustion, confusion and wonder. Amazed that we had this perfect little person who would change the course of our life.
I hope these insights from my experience can possibly help another mother!

Over the Christmas holidays, I wanted to capture some sweet shots of my youngest daughter. Not in the studio but rather at home and bit of a lifestyle session.
My family loves Christmas and every inch of the formal living room is decorated. For my little girls (and my older kids too!) this is the most exciting time of the year, with presents tucked under the tree, the lights in every window and the Hallmark Channel playing every night.
Rosalie doesn’t quite understand the season but has a general idea and realized there were new rules about not being allowed to touch the pretty ornaments. Her face always lights up when she would get close to one of the tree (confession I had three trees this year….and if I can get away with it I will add a few more next year) and I wanted to capture the wonder.
She had a sweet new dress and for once I allowed her to get a but closer and touch a few a the less delicate ornaments. My typical style of photography is posed and I wanted these pictures to feel a little more lifestyle, but I still gave her a few prompts and instruction, so not a true lifestyle but I am happy with the result.
They are just nice Christmassy snap shots that I will always treasure.

I love when families return to my studio with their new baby! I photographed his big sister almost three years ago and she was so excited to be holding her sweet new brother! Toddlers can be unpredictable when it comes to new siblings but she was super excited to be helpful.
Before being a photographer, I was a pet groomer, I love when clients ask if they can include their puppies! Being a dog person it is a fun to have a change of pace and this is not the first time I have photographed them.
Every baby is so different and this little guy kept popping his little wrist upwards, so I decided that I would let him do what he felt came most natural to him and pop this little wrist up when on the white backdrop.

Their story began before they were even born. Claire and Mitch are from two families that were very close many years ago, their fathers shared stories of when they were roommates, met their wives and began their families. There were even baby pictures of the bride and groom. As time went by their families drifted apart but somehow Claire and Mitch found each other again and promptly fell in love. Their whirlwind romance and love story was welcomed by all their family and friends who were present to see this couple be married in the same church that the groom’s parent had been married in years before.
The day was sunny but one of the coldest days of the year but it did not stop the couple from going uptown and outside for their portraits, from the historic Saint John City market to King Square and the Imperial.
Their reception, at Lily Lake Pavilion, was filled with laughter and stories of all of the bridal party, rapping from the amazing maid of honour (the bride’s sister) and speeches from their Dad’s. This is the second time I have had the chance to work with the Mitch’s family. It was only July when we were at Ticklebelly Hill with Hannah and BJ, this time they were the MC and groomsmen, and it felt like working with old friends.
Claire and Mitchell, thank you for asking me to capture your special day, finishing 2017 with your wedding was wonderful. Claire kept repeating it was a perfect day and as you can see it was a perfect day. I wish you both all the best that life will bring you and your family.

This adorable baby girl had her first photo session in my Saint John, NB studio! her beautiful photo session was full of soft pinks and creamy neutrals to give her session a beautiful timeless style. She was a sweet chubby baby at almost 10 pounds and so cuddly! I loved her hair so much and we kept remarking how her brother did not have as much as she did!
She is the second baby of of a sweet family, that I have had the pleasure to capture! I love that second babies teach us the amazing lesson that our love grows. As parents we think that we could never love anyone as much as our first born. We cannot fathom that miracle could happen twice in our life. Second babies teach us that our excitement and love for a new little life does happen. They show us that our love is not divided but will grow.

I have not seen this little beauty since her newborn session! She was a beautiful sweet newborn and now at one she was still gorgeous! I pulled out one of my new sitter outfits from the exclusive Goodnightmoon Props with the matching headband. I loved the vintage feel with the cream barn wood!
When planning her cake smash her mother wanted something with flowers. I threw together a few ideas and finally decided on a vintage rose theme cake smash. Large soft pink roses with the chips white flower and old crate, paired with a sweet white eyelet dress. Sky LOVED her cake! She smacked it, laugh and tasted and giggled. It was worth all of the mess!
Thank you so much for bringing Sky back to the studio! I love being able to see them again and capturing this special time in her life!
