This is a question I get regularly asked. At what age should newborn photos be taken? My answer is usually between 4 to 12 days from birth but really it depends!
Sometime babies come extra early and need more time in the NICU. This happens not too often but when it does parents feel like their world has flipped upside down. All those plans and time lines are thrown out the window. When it comes to your baby pictures we wait until they are discharged from the hospital and come home. Typically this is close to their actual due date. When baby is discharged we ask that parents call us and we try to get baby in as soon as possible.
Some babies are born well over their due date (let me tell you about one of my own babies who leisurely arrived over 2 weeks late), these babies I like to get into the studio within 4-6 days. After 200+ babies I have found these babies are more alert, a little more sensitive, and waiting to the 12-day mark means they are less ‘womb-like’ compared to babies who arrive within a week of their due date.
No matter what we do during pregnancy and birth, things do not always go as planned and complications occur. Babies need more time in the hospital or procedures that need to occur. Again in my studio, we wait till the baby is discharged from the hospital and book them as soon as possible.
This is something that were had to face after the Covid quarantine! Babies born while we were closed and still wanted those fresh little baby pictures. What were learned is some babies were not as bendy but some were still able to pose nice and curly. Some babies were much more alert and soothing them to sleep was NOT easy! Our sessions were much longer but we were still able to create beautiful pictures.
As a professional photographer I prefer photographing newborns between 5-10 days. Babies are still very sleepy and curly, nursing issues have been addressed, formulas have been figured out. Mom has had a little healing time. There are times I will stretch that time out till 14 days because behind the scenes I may have a busy schedule with my family, my assistant may not be available or we are slammed in the studio with sessions.
In conclusion with our experience and knowledge we feel confident we can create a beautiful session for your new little love and will tell you what days we have available and what works best for us and for your little one!

Seriously, these were the best newborn Pictures in Saint John when I was done. Just look at her??
She was unbelievably beautiful. Teeny tiny features, little button nose, lashes, and that hair??!!! As a maker of bald babies I am always in awe and jealous that mama’s had babies will full heads of hair.
The entire session was Jen and I oohing and awing over her sweetness!!
Soft delicate pinks, tiny fragile headbands and this session was as feminine as this sweet little girl! Mixed with cream and ivory s that the session flows beuatifull together.

About a month ago I received an email from one of our expecting mothers, her message exuded stress because her new baby was born too early and now was in the NICU. Knowing that she needed comfort and support I turned to my business Facebook account and asked what advice could mothers give to another mother when their baby is born too early and now in the care of the local NICU.
The responses were heartfelt, well written and beautiful. I did not want those sweet words of encouragement to get lost among the daily posts of social media and decided to share their messages here. The next time a mother messages, I can send her here, to read the words of other mother’s who have stood in her very shoes. In the hope’s she receives the comfort she needs during that time.
A special thank you to these wonderful mothers who took the time to give hope, advice, and reassurance. I appreciate you all reaching out!

This sweet family has been coming to me since they were expecting their first baby! I have been lucky enough to capture so many of their family milestones.
Here we are six years later and this time I captured their family at New River Beach! The summer was a perfect time because the days are long and evenings warm. Bedtimes were thrown out out the window because I book them when the sunshine would be the best timing.
We had fun running around, playing in the sand, chasing their youngest who was curious and busy. Ending the evening with playing in the water.
As a mother, I know how it can be stressful preparing for a photo session but the end result is a gorgeous canvas on their wall. It will remind them of when their kids still fit on their laps. How they begged their parents to chase them on the beach. How they openly giggled at the bad jokes. That canvas will be their ticket back in time.

Vacations are amazing for all the obvious reasons; you are away from work and household responsibility. Going to places you have always wanted to visit or live. Scedules do not matter and fun is the only agenda.
One growing trend I see every year is families hiring me for a family session while they vacation by the ocean. Often these are families who do not live by the Atlantic or Bay of Fundy. The request for location is always by a local beach or by the rocks in St Andrews.
The tricky part is timing the session! For those of us who live by the water, we know how quickly a beautiful sunny day can turn grey as the fog rolls in and temperature dips. Therefore, setting expectations and having flexibility can be key for scheduling a great evening for a photo shoot.
For myself, I will ask how long my clients will be in the area, and we coordinate schedules and set 2 dates: one for rain/severe fog backup. I watch the weather and radars and if it looks like a chance of rain we will reschedule but will still go on if there is overcast.
When planning the wardrobe it is also smart to dress in layers. It can get cool quick on the water (which is awesome if you want to escape the summer heat!). Plan to wear clothing that your family can play in and have fun.
Planning months in advance is also advisable as those summer sessions get booked quickly!

So many years ago (over 8!) I was a brand spanking new photographer. I have a camera and one lens and nothing else. My portfolio consisted of a small handful of families, a few babies and hundreds of my three kids (8 years ago I only had the older kids).
Goodlife Photography was gracious enough to allow me to second shoot at her weddings. This was amazing because Julie was kind enough to allow a green photographer to tag along, learn and observe. Allison and Greg’s wedding was one of those second shooting gigs.
Fast forward Allison was a client of mine for dog grooming, they live up the street and I see her here and there.
When she messaged for a maternity session I was over the moon happy for her and Greg! They have waited so very long for this little prince to arrive.
She had a beautiful red gown, I had a black gown and we had a small town with limited variety to shoot from but I also know how pretty this little hidden gem could be in the sunshine.
We had hoped for snow and we didn’t quite get enough to completely cover the brush and grass but the bright spot was it was easier to walk around.
I loved her hair and makeup! So perfect! Honestly, how many times do we get to dress up in a gorgeous gown, wear lovely makeup and do our hair like a princess? Not enough times!
When I spied her scarf she wore on the walk with her winter coat I knew I had to use it with this black gown. Sometimes it works out beautifully!
